The right size for every market

Duvet and pillow sizes differ from country to country, and so do beds and bed linen. Here are the common sizes in the markets we supply, with the matching bed widths — and how to choose the right size.

01Sizes by market

Common sizes, country by country

Choose a market. You will see the common duvet and pillow sizes, the bed width each duvet suits and the usual mattress sizes. Sizes vary by retailer and brand: these are the ones you will meet most often.

Netherlands and Belgium

Lengths of 200 and 220 cm; 220 cm for tall sleepers and mattresses of 210 or 220 cm. In Belgium, the square 65 × 65 cm pillow is common alongside 60 × 70.

Germany, Austria, Switzerland

A double bed is usually made up with two single duvets. The 40 × 80 cm pillow is now the standard, next to the classic 80 × 80. Switzerland has sizes of its own, such as 160 × 210 cm.

France

Beds are often 190 cm long. Pillows are traditionally square; the rectangular 50 × 70 cm pillow is gaining ground. Double beds often carry a bolster (traversin) across their full width as well.

United Kingdom

Sizes are named after the bed: Single, Double, King and Super King. Bedding is metric; beds are often still described in feet and inches.

Scandinavia

A double bed almost always gets two single duvets. Denmark and Norway use 140 cm wide duvets, Sweden and Finland 150 cm; pillow sizes differ by country too.

United States and Canada

Sizes in inches, named after the mattress. Duvets and comforters vary widely by brand: these are typical sizes. In Canada, a Full is often called a Double.

02The right duvet size

Generous, on every side

A duvet should fall over the edge of the mattress on both sides and cover the sleeper from head to toe. Four steps, as a rule of thumb.

  1. Measure the mattress

    The mattress's width × length is the starting point — not the bed frame.

  2. Choose the width

    A duvet is about 50⁠–⁠80 cm wider than the mattress in all, so it hangs over on both sides. Two people under one duvet: at least 200 cm; on a bed of 160 cm or wider, 240 cm or more.

  3. Choose the length

    The duvet is 20⁠–⁠30 cm longer than the sleeper is tall. Taller than 1.85 m, or a 210 or 220 cm mattress? Choose 220 cm.

  4. Follow the bed linen

    A duvet or pillow has to fit the covers and pillowcases sold in its market. So choose the standard sizes of the country you sell in.
