Why production in the Netherlands pays off for European buyers

Supply security, short lead times, stable quality and room for exclusive ranges: what bedding from a Dutch factory offers a European buyer, weighed up soberly.

For a lot of bedding, the sum used to be simple: produce wherever the unit price is lowest, and accept the distance that comes with it. That sum is less simple today. Long supply lines leave a collection exposed to delays, to swinging freight costs and to stock that spends months in transit before a single piece is sold.

HMG Bedtextiel makes its pillows and duvets 100% in the Netherlands, in its own 12,500 m² factory in Eindhoven, and supplies customers across Europe and beyond from there. This article sets out what production close to your market gives you as a European buyer, and what to look at when you compare. Without worked examples that only hold for us: the trade-off differs by product and by programme.

Supply security close to your market

Buying from another continent means planning far ahead. An order is placed months before the season, travels by container and arrives when demand may already have moved on. Any disruption on the way — a congested port, a diverted shipping route, a shortage of containers — passes straight through to your shelf.

Producing in Europe removes most of those links. From Eindhoven, a pallet travels by road to your distribution centre, on a schedule you agree with us. That is why European supply-chain independence is not a side issue for us but a strategic goal: less dependence on production overseas, and a supplier you can visit.

Short lead times, less stock in transit

Short lines mean you can order later, closer to actual demand. Instead of one large order per season, you call off smaller batches more often. That lowers the risk of surplus at the end of the season, and of empty shelves when an item sells faster than expected.

At HMG, our own infrastructure helps: automated internal logistics with AGVs, an advanced WMS and a warehouse expanded from 3,000 to 6,000 pallet positions. Standard items are held in stock, so a repeat order need not mean a new production run. Specific lead times are agreed with you per programme.

Stable quality, a predictable cost price

A low unit price is only a good price if the quality is the same order after order. With distant production, a deviation often shows up only when the container arrives. Close by, you can visit the factory, have a sample adjusted quickly and raise a question before the product is in your stores.

Our production is highly automated: eight fully automatic pillow lines and four fully automatic duvet lines, with automated filling and weighing and quality control at every production step. Each batch can be traced back to its production and raw materials. Automation keeps quality consistent and the cost price under control, even at high volumes. See how it works in the hall on our production page.

So compare not just the ex-works unit prices, but the total cost up to your shelf:

  • transport and insurance, from the factory to your distribution centre;
  • import costs and the paperwork that comes with them;
  • the stock in transit, and the capital tied up in it;
  • the risk of delay, and what a missed promotion or an empty shelf costs;
  • surplus at the end of the season that has to be marked down or stored.

Room for exclusive collections

An exclusive collection for one retailer, a promotional item for a particular week, a variant for a new market: projects like these need short lines between buying, development and production. With us, they sit under one roof, in the same building as the factory and the showroom, and you deal directly with the people who develop and make your product.

That makes it easier to adjust a sample once more, add a size or change the packaging for another channel. Our services, from collection development to private label, are set out on our services page; how such a project runs step by step is covered in private-label bedding in six steps.

European rules, European standards

Bedding sold in the EU has to comply with European regulations, from general product safety to the fibre composition on the label. If you have it made outside Europe, you rely on the factory knowing those rules — and often only check afterwards.

We produce in line with the EU regulations that apply to our products, and have our products lab-tested for the markets we supply. Because development and production sit under one roof, your market’s requirements are built in from the first technical sheet.

Your market’s requirements

Does your market call for a specific certification or test, OEKO-TEX for example? Mention it in your brief, and we will tell you what we can demonstrate for each product.

A family business that can scale

You choose a supplier for years, not for one order. HMG has been in bedding since 1983 and a manufacturer since 1994, and is still 100% family-owned; the third generation has led the company since 2021. That means strategic independence, quick decisions and a long-term course. What this means in practice is explained in our philosophy.

Alongside that, there is scale. In 2025 we doubled our pillow capacity to 25,000 pillows a day and added three new duvet lines; together, the lines can make up to 15 million pillows and 2 million duvets a year. Our target for 2027 is fully robotised pillow production. Your volume can grow without you having to change supplier.
